MAF2022 – Methods and Applications in Fluorescence

The 17th Methods and Applications in Fluorescence (MAF) conference is on at Chalmers tekniska högskola in Gothenburg, Sweden!

We are happy to be exhibiting at MAF2022, highlighting the Cobolt Skyra multi-line laser and Cobolt 06-01 Series lasers for life science applications. Its equally exciting to be back at exhibitions and wonderful to have the chance to meet researchers and customers as well as being able to hear the latest trends from the conference presenters.

MAF has a long-standing tradition of bringing together world-leading experts in fluorescence, one of the most powerful spectroscopy and imaging methods with applications ranging from materials research to life sciences. Our aim is to keep and develop this tradition and to gather a large number of established scientists, emerging investigators, students and postdocs to discuss state-of-the-art of this field of research.

Celebrating 5 years of the Cobolt Skyra multi-line laser!

We are proud to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Cobolt Skyra; the world’s first ultra-compact and permanently aligned laser engine! Since its market launch in 2017 the Cobolt Skyra has enabled development of smaller, more robust and easier-to-use bioinstrumentation for research and clinical diagnosis.

The laser is built using Cobolt’s proprietary HTCure™ manufacturing technology for ultimate robustness in a compact, hermetically sealed package. HTCure™ results in an ultra-stable, permanent alignment of optical elements, with very precise and stable overlap of the combined output beams. As a result, Cobolt lasers have proven to deliver unmatched reliability and performance both in the lab and industrial environments with demonstrated lifetime capability of >60 000 hours and several thousand units installed in the field.

We are very flattered by competitors who seem to be taking inspiration not only from our product development but also from our 2017 marketing campaign: Cobolt Skyra – A sky of colours #inthepalmofyourhand

C-WAVE on tour at CERN

HÜBNER Photonics sponsored PhD candidate, Mitzi Urquiza, has spent the last month testing the full capabilities of our C-WAVE GTR single frequency tunable laser at the infamous particle physics research laboratory in Switzerland, CERN. The C-WAVE GTR is deployed to seed a pulsed dye amplifier, enabling high-resolution spectroscopy of actinides.

Students testing C-WAVE at CERN
Mitzi Urquiza (PhD candidate within LISA-ITN) and Volker Sonnenschein (R&D engineer) from HÜBNER Photonics setting up the widely tunable OPO system C-WAVE GTR at CERN.
LISA recognition

The project was a collaboration with the CRIS (Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy) experiment at the ISOLDE (Isotope mass Separator On-Line) facility at CERN. Mitzu and her research team seeded a Pulsed Dye Amplifier (PDA) with the C-WAVE GTR tunable lasers and continuously tuned the wavelength to resolve the Hyperfine Structure (HFS) of some exotic silver isotopes using the AbsoluteLambda option to the C-WAVE. This was to compare the performance of a solid state OPO against other methods like a  seeded pulsed Ti:sa laser and a cw dye laser, as a first step towards using a continuous wave OPO for high-resolution spectroscopy of actinides as part of the LISA project.

The project was hugely successful and the C-WAVE GTR proved to be the ideal single frequency tunable source for such an experiment.

‘This project has received funding from the European’s Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement number 861198 project ‘LISA’ (Laser Ionization and Spectroscopy of Actinides) Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN).’

Sculpting the brain with Optogenetics

Sculpted Light in the Brain is a recurring conference aimed at fostering collaborations between neuroscientists, computer scientists, optics researchers, and other scientists who share the common interest of using and developing novel technologies to observe and control neural activity in the awake, behaving brain. “Sculpted Light” refers to a broad class of methods where light is shaped to probe neural function.

https://www.sculptedlight.org/

We were happy to be an official sponsor for this year’s conference and hope all participants and speakers have had an enlightened experience together. As manufacturers of high-performance lasers serving this exciting field, we offer both CW lasers and femtosecond lasers which can be used in many delicate experiments that are involved with optogenetics for neuroscientists.
